Why curiosity is your business survival skill in 2015
With 2015 now well underway, it may be a good idea to make it the year you ask yourself some tough questions about your business. It’s easy to take your attention off business planning and focus on day-to-day processes, but to ensure your goals for the future are on track to being fulfilled, here are some questions you may want to consider:
- Is your business running at its optimum level? Or are there new or different processes and systems you should be considering?
- What are your competitors doing differently?
- How are you responding to digital disruption?
- Have you considered the different financial regulations, particularly in relation to tax and super?
- How can you innovate to reach a new audience?
- Is your will and estate plan up to date?
- Do you want to stagnate or grow from measured risks?
Interestingly, studies pin point curiosity as being a key driver for success. Professor and author of ‘Curious? Discover the missing ingredient to a fulfilling life’, Todd Kashan says “curiosity helps us approach uncertainty with a positive attitude, and although you might believe that certainty and control over your circumstances bring you pleasure, it is often uncertainty and challenge that bring the longest-lasting benefits.”
In fact, curiosity causes our minds to be active instead of passive, it allows us to be observant of new ideas, and it opens up possibilities we may have otherwise been unaware of. With curiosity often comes an element of risk that manifests itself in a certain amount of failure. Being complacent about business plans can result in a lack of risk taking, and whilst there are always dangers that come from exploration, the lessons taken from exploration can lead to a larger reward.
